WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- In response to Rockford’s growing crime problem, and a lack of cops on the street, local leaders are planning a crime summit for January 16.

We hear it all the time, why isn't anyone doing anything about all the crime in Rockford? Well with budgets expected to be tight again next year, Stateline leaders say they want to find a way to do more with less, and that includes maximizing the money there is, to get more police on patrol.

County board chairman Scott Christensen says part of the meeting will be open to the public, but the majority of the 4-hour session will be spent talking about where resources need to go. The county is down 20 deputies, and the city is down more than that so local leaders want to maximize the manpower they still have. They will be zeroing in on the drug and gang issue and everyone from school administrators to the state's attorney will be invited.

"We have a public safety issues clearly in our community and the whole idea is to maximize our manpower to we get as much presence on the streets as possible,” said Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen.
Leaders of local law enforcement agencies already meet once a week to discuss problems in the city and the county. But they want more people on board to talk about how other agencies like the park district police and state police can step up in areas of town that need more attention.

The reason for this face-to-face meeting is because of scheduling issues. Everyone is busy and it's almost impossible to get everyone in the same room, but face time is important. They will also be bringing in outside agencies, people from Cook County and the Illinois Criminal Justice Authority to talk about what has worked in other cities.
