ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- We're learning more about the elderly woman found dead in her home on Martha Avenue. The Winnebago County Coroner says she's 85 year old Ocie Hughes. Police were called to her home on the city's southeast side the morning of September 27th. We're told Hughes was covered in blood, but the cause of her death is still under investigation. Authorities are still looking for her killer and searching for a motive.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- An elderly woman was found dead in her home this morning, and Rockford police are calling it a murder. It's the department's seventh homicide of the year.
Rockford police officers were called to 2115 Martha Avenue around 7:30 this morning where they found blood and an 85-year old victim who had trauma to her body.
One neighbor says the victim's daughter found the body at the house this morning and when the neighbor went inside to help, she says she saw blood all over the floor.
Another neighbor says she could hear what was happening when the relative found the body.
"I was in the bathroom and I could hear the screaming and then she came outside,” said neighbor Dixie Hackler. “I'm shaking inside still because that's right next door."
The murder also hits close to home for the Rockford police department. It was an officer's mother-in-law who was killed.
"It's a fact that it is an officer's relative but we'll work just as hard on anybody's murder that we're investigating," said Marc Welsh with the Rockford Police Department.
Police are not releasing the name of the officer who's relative it was. They're also waiting to release the name of the victim, until more family is notified.
Right now there are no suspects in custody and police are still investigating a motive. They would not say whether or not there was forced entry to the home or if anything was taken.
