ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- Residents in Rockford are getting new recycling bins.

About 51,000 homes are to receive larger, 32-gallon recycling bins. They'll replace 18-gallon bins this spring. The city is in the process of finalizing a seven-year contract with Rock River Disposal for curbside waste removal.

The Rockford Register Star reports Wednesday that the city's recycling rate has typically been below the national average.

Illinois Recycling Association President Marta Keane says the larger containers are a good thing. She says it sends a message to residents to recycle more.
