ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A busy afternoon for the Rockford Fire Department as they battle two fires.
The first started around 3:00 p.m. Monday at 501 Kilburn Avenue. Crews arrived to find smoke coming out of the back second floor window. The building was vacant and condemned. Damage estimates are around $40,000, the cause of the fire is unknown.
And a half-hour later, firefighters were called to the Longwood Plaza Apartment complex on East State Street. We're told a heater in the basement stairwell started fire. A sprinkler system quickly put it out so damage was minimal, $500. Smoke did fill the entire building forcing everyone to evacuate. No one was hurt.
