Rockford Police Department Nixle Alert:
Police are on scene of a 1 car vehicle crash at this location, which was reported at 11:10pm this evening. Three persons were taken to local hospitals as a result of the accident. At the time of this writing, it appears all subjects were in the same vehicle. The street is being blocked off to investigate the accident. Please avoid this area.
UPDATE: We're told the van carrying the three passengers was heading south on 6th street near Prairie, when it veered off the road and hit a tree before bursting into flames. 24 year old Chad Elder was trapped inside for 20 minutes before crews could get him out. He died a few hours later. Two other men were able to escape and are listed in critical condition.
A vigil honoring Chad Elder will be held Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The vigil will take place at the scene of the accident, located at 400 N. 6th street.
UPDATE: As of right now, the victim listed in critical condition has died. He was a 24 year old Rockford man and was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Two others remain in life threatening condition.
Names have not been released. We will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
When firefighters arrived there were heavy flames showing from the front of the vehicle.
ROCKFORD (WIFR)-- Three people were sent to the hospital after a car crash in Rockford.
Police say the it happened just after 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night in the 300 block of North 6th Street. According to the Rockford Fire Department four ambulances were called to the scene and firefighters were needed for extrication.
As of right now there is no information on the status of the victims
