Report Calls for Updating School P.E. programs

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- An effort is underway to update physical education programs in Illinois public schools.

A state task force released a 148-page report Wednesday that it submitted to Gov. Pat Quinn.

The report calls for new strategies for P.E. programs to raise the emphasis on individual lifetime fitness and lessen the prominence of competitive sports. The report notes that research links physical activity with improved academic performance.

The co-chairs of the task force are Illinois Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch and Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck.

One proposed new standard covers advocating for the health of individuals, families and communities. Regulatory review and public comment on the proposed changes are expected during the 2013-2014 school year, with implementation starting the following year.
