UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Negotiations are still going on at Rock Valley College more than four and a half hours after they started. The negotiations come on the day that the RVC faculty filed to strike.
A ten day notice was filed Monday by the Rock Valley College faculty to the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. This means teachers could strike starting February 24th.
Urgent meetings have been scheduled between the college board and the faculty. Both sides agreed to meet Tuesday night in light of the faculty voting 134 to10 in favor of the intent to strike.
We've been waiting to hear a call from RVC Communications Director Nancy Chamberlin if an agreement has been made at Tuesday nights meeting.
Another negotiation meeting is set for Wednesday at 5:30pm.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rock Valley College Union gave notice of its intent to strike and now the College Board and faculty are meeting to see if they can come to a compromise.
The negotiation teams will meet today at 5:30 and hopefully leaving tonight with an agreement.
Both sides agreed to meet in light of the faculty voting 134 to 10 in favor of the intent to strike. a ten day notice was filed with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board and depending when official notices are filed, teachers can walk either next Thursday or Friday. We spoke with Faculty Union President Tom Alisankus, who says that strategically the faculty would not walk close to the weekend, but rather on a Wednesday--this way teachers would only lose two days worth of pay. Classes would only be cancelled for two days and talks between the college and faculty could take place over the weekend.
There is no word tonight on how long the meeting will go, but Tom Alisankus says hopefully today on Valentine's Day both sides walk into this feeling the love to get an agreement made.
If the faculty does strike, classes would be cancelled and depending on how long the strike would be students would not be refunded their tuition if it lasted till the end of the semester.
Close to 200 faculty members at RVC have been working without a contract since July. That's more than six months. If they do decide to walk out, more than sixteen thousand students will be affected.

yeah- books this semester cost me about 600 dollars- its sad I won't be able to get any of it back if they cancel the semester.
Anonymous, oops! RVC did post the 10-day tuition policy in its online handbook. They are in violation of it with this year's calendar. This should be fun for them. They will have to return money to students who dropped in that time frame if they did not do so! "Tuition Reimbursement Rock Valley College has determined students may receive a tuition refund upon dropping credit courses based on the following guidelines. In each case if the student drops courses by the specified date, all tuition and fees are refunded. There is no prorated schedule for tuition and fee refunds. See important dates on the inside cover of the credit courses schedule. 16-week course (fall-spring) 100% Refund – Before or during first 10 business days of semester No Refund – Given after the 10th business day" Link:http://www.rockvalleycollege.edu/About/StudentPolicyIndex.cfm
Anonymous, regarding the last day to drop with a refund: it was less than 10 days: Jan. 24. I refer you to this RVC link: http://www.rockvalleycollege.edu/Admission/Registration/DatesToKnow.cfm Classes began on January 18 (after MLK Jr. Day and a faculty in-service day). And yes, that drop window is too small for the needs of most students. Something else RVC should consider fixing.
