DOWNTOWN ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The lights around Rockford's City Hall will take on a different hue for the month of October.

The outdoor lamps will shine purple in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence estimates one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. City leaders hope the lights will raise awareness about the problem and encourage more women to speak up and get out of abusive relationships.

And Monday night in Washington, D.C. The White House turns pink to mark the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
