ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- This is definitely not a night you want to be outside. But unfortunately there are too many people in the area that have no choice.
Wednesday night a dedicated group of volunteers spent the evening trying to count up the homeless in Winnebago County.
Four teams checked 21 different spots including the Winnebago County Justice Center. They handed out bags with sandwiches, blankets and toiletries.
Those taking part in the count were asked a few basic questions to get referrals to local agencies and to address any immediate medical or physical needs.
Communities throughout the U.S. will do a check like this one sometime during the month of January. It's required in order to receive federal homeless assistance funding.
