Plows Working to Keep Roads Clear

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The snow is continuing to come down as it has since early this afternoon. Right now, plows and salt trucks are working through it.

Thanks to temperatures that remain in the lower 30’s, earlier this morning we were dealing with a whole other issue: freezing rain. Despite air temperatures being above freezing, our recent cold snap left many Stateline roads a sheet of ice.
"Even though the air temperature was up, the pavement temperature was still down around 29 or 30 degrees. So when that rain hit the pavement, if there was no salt or risdual salt from previous operations it was bound to start icing up in places,” said Streets Superintendent with the City of Rockford, Mark Stockman.

Salt crews have been out since 3:45 this morning and will continue to be out all night. If you haven’t shoveled your driveway, it’s probably a good idea to do so. As temperatures fall tonight, the slush is likely to become solid, making it a whole lot harder to clear in the morning.

The weather has also had an impact on many area events. For a full list of cancellations please see the closings section here on our website or check out our Storm Team Mobile Lab apps in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
