MORRISON, Ill. (AP) -- A forensic pathologist says a hammer was used to kill four people in a Rock Falls apartment in 2008.
Sauk Valley Media reports that Dr. Mark Peters mentioned the weapon while testifying Monday at a hearing to decide which autopsy photos would be admitted at Nicholas Sheley's upcoming murder trial.
The 34-year-old is accused of killing eight people in June of 2008, including three adults and a 2-year-old boy in Rock Island. He's serving two life sentences after being convicted in two cases; he'll stand trial next spring for the Rock Island slayings.
Prosecutors say a murder weapon has never been recovered, and this was the first time a specific weapon has been mentioned during legal proceedings.
Judge Jeffrey O'Connor ruled that 19 photographs can be admitted as evidence.
