New Student Recruitment Plans for Rock Valley College

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Enrollment isn't growing as fast as Rock Valley College would like. About 8,800 students go there. The Board of Trustees is trying to figure out whether students are getting the job skills they need when they earn an RVC degree.

Part of the plan is to get more students to declare a major earlier on, by requiring academic advising during their first semester. In order to do this, the board may have to hire more advisors.

Trustees also want to work with area employers to boost the number of older students by 10%. RVC's retention rate is already up nearly 3% from 5 years ago. Trustees hope to develop a way to keep that momentum going. These plans will be finalized in November.

Recently, Rockford mayor Larry Morrissey publicly discussed his interest in starting a downtown culinary arts program. Trustee Randy Schaefer tells us that probably won't happen because there aren't enough interested students.
