CHERRY VALLEY (WIFR) -- A major overhaul is planned for the old movie theater near the Cherry Vale Mall.

The space has been empty since the 90s and according to Cherry Valley village trustees, the building has been bought by the owners of the Gymnastics Academy of Rockford. They are in the process of transforming the space into an indoor sports facility. This will be GAR’s third location in the Stateline. The Cherry Valley village board voted on Tuesday to waive more than $1,800 in fines racked up by the property’s former owner for not moving the parking lot. Village leaders look forward to see business bustling in the space once more.

“It's a wonderful feeling to have that project move. The mall is the cornerstone of the business district for the village of Cherry Valley and having that building that’s been prominent there for years to have life in it again is great," says Village President Jim Claeyssen

The village board hopes this spurs other businesses to move into this area. A new cafe is opening up in the old Baker's Square building. Another eatery may soon spring up where a fire burned down several businesses last December.
