New Law Requires Kids in School at Age 6

SPRINGFIELD (WIFR) -- The students in some schools will be even younger starting next school year. A new Illinois law says in 2014 six year olds have to be enrolled in school.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the law today. He says lowering the compulsory age from seven to six gives students an early start to their education. Some lawmakers believe the change will also lower truancy rates in elementary school. This means any student who turns six on or before September 1, 2014 has to be enrolled in school.

Twenty-six other states have the same rule. Eight states require students start school at five years old.
