BELOIT (WIFR) – Several local teens are getting a different kind of help. More than 400 students are considered homeless in the city of Beloit and now they have a place to lay their heads at night.

“My job will be to help them guide through, to learn those skills that they’re going to need, when they go off to college.”

Samantha Gaffey says he’s excited to give dozens of homeless girls a bed and room to call their own. She’s the resident advisor at the new project 1649 Robin House, the first group home in Beloit for 18 and 19-year-old girls.

“A lot of us were lucky to have really good solid parents that were able to give us those skills, but unfortunately, all of our girls don’t have that stable base at home,” said Gaffey.

It’s all a part of a plan that started five years ago.

“So they trust who’s here and that everything’s going to be taken care of."

There’s eight rooms at Robin House, each one with a flat screen TV. Everything in the home was donated by the Beloit School District and local community groups.

:it isn’t the biggest dream come true ever.”

As the homeless liaison for local schools, Robin Stuht says this isn’t a typical shelter.

“They can stay up to 18 months, but they are all put on individual action plans and they work with their own individual life coach,” Stuht said.

In addition to figuring out their life goals each girl must work or enroll in school.

“They’re already working against all odds, you know, just trying to survive and still doing well.”

We spoke with one of the girls who is moving into the Robin House. She didn’t want to go on camera, however she tells us she’s thankful to have a place to call home.

Organizers hope a state grant will help them over the next five years. They plan to open a “Rueben House” in Janesville for homeless boys.
