New Exhibit at Veterans Memorial Hall

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Veterans Memorial Hall will display thru Veterans Day the winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars national Buddy Poppy display contest.

The display consists of 1,367 paper poppies and represents the Navy destroyer the USS Cole. In October 2000, 17 soldiers died in an attack on the ship in a Yemen harbor; 40 more were injured. It is accompanied by an audio tape describing the events surrounding the attack of the USS Cole, narrated by Chuck Ingles, VFW Roscoe Post 2955 commander, with excerpts from radio broadcasts.

Larry Lowety and other members of Roscoe's VFW Post 2955 have created a display fitting of this national recognition. After more than 200 hours of construction and 1,367 pa¬per poppy flowers, members took the paper poppy flower to new heights.

The Roscoe veterans took first place in district competition then at the state level in June before heading off to the national VFW Convention in Reno, Nev. in July. They raised money through donations from people in the community and from businesses to go to the convention, said poppy chairman Bill Graves.

Veterans Memorial Hall honor’s all Veterans and is proud to provide the community this opportunity to see this fine exhibit. Our hours are M-F 9 AM till 4 PM with after hours and weekend tours available upon request.
