UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Quite the scare in a neighborhood on Rockford's south east side, after a gas line ruptured.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday when the Rock River Water Reclamation District was digging in the 1900 block of 17th Street and accidentally struck the line. Homes in a one block radius were evacuated until about 3:30 p.m.that's when Nicor crews sealed off the gas line.

Residences in a one block radius were evacuated for precautionary measures.

The Rockford Fire department and Nicor are still on scene. We will have an update as more information becomes available.
