ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- On Saturday, May 11, 2013, the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition and United Way of Rock River Valley will join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 245 to help Stamp Out Hunger! This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive and has grown to be the largest single-day food drive. Last year, the community donated over 50,000 pounds of food in Rockford, Loves Park, and Machesney Park. All the donated food was distributed throughout the 13 area food pantries that belong to the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition.
The NALC Branch 245’s annual Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive is an effort to provide food to the local food pantries of the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition. And the need is even greater this year than in previous years. According to the Hunger Study in 2010 provided by Northern Illinois Food Bank, 18.2% (or 53,400 individuals) of Winnebago County residents do not have a secure food source and qualify to receive assistance from area food pantries. Nearly 20,000 of those that qualify for assistance are children, of which 6,400 of them do not qualify for federal nutritional programs.
To help Stamp Out Hunger! in the Rock River Valley this year, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods (such as canned tuna, soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal, etc.) next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 11th. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the area and deliver them to the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition.
