DEKALB (WIFR) -- A local university welcomed its first new president in 13 years today. Northern Illinois University trustees voted for Dr. Douglas Baker as their 12th president earlier this afternoon. Baker was chosen from a field of close to 30 candidates over the last few months.

An expert in organizational strategy, structure and motivation, Baker said he hopes to bring NIU to the force as a national model for a 21st Century University, stating past problems are just a distraction. He is focused on moving into the future, a move both he and the university are very excited about.

The Huskie spirit is strong and it is a great institution. I am really impressed with the faculty, staff, students, and alumni,” said Dr. Baker. “There is such a good vibe with the alumni; we are just as pleased as we can be to be joining the University.”
Baker holds a PhD in business from the University of Nebraska. Currently Baker serves as an executive vice president for the University of Idaho. He’ll replace current NIU president John Peters who will be stepping down later this summer.

Baker takes the reigns at a positive time for the University. We’ve learned they’ve received more applications by this time of year, than ever before. They’re up 11%. So far, 18,000 students have applied. Many will be denied because enrollment for all of undergrad is at 16,000.
