Neighbors say they will hold a vigil for the boy at 5:00 Thursday night outside the home. Thomas' funeral will be this Friday.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A Rockford mother is in jail for allegedly stabbing her eight year old son to death all while police say the child’s father and sibling were sleeping.

We've learned the victim was Thomas Kossow, a student at McIntosh Elementary School. Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies were called to a home on Woodrow Drive a little before 1:00 this morning. They say they found Kossow's body in the driveway with multiple wounds. We're told his mother, 39-year-old Jody Kossow was standing over him. She's been charged with first degree murder and is currently being held at the Winnebago County Jail.

Detectives say no one else is being questioned right now and investigators tell us they had to wake the father to tell him what had happened outside.

Tauhidah El-Amin says she feels like she lost a grandson, saying she considered 8-year-old Thomas Kossow one of her own, since he moved across the street on Woodrow Avenue almost a year ago.

“He’d bring my trash cans in for me. If he thought I wasn’t feeling too good, he’d go to my mailbox and get my mail and bring it to me. He’d bring my mail in to me, he was just like one of the family.”
El-Amin says she was shocked to hear Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested his mother for allegedly stabbing Thomas to death.

Neighbors say the Kossow family had only lived in the area for eight months, but neighbors say they never experience anything out of the ordinary.

Kevin Jacobson describes Kossow as a loving mother. “They were very good people…I couldn’t believe she snapped, that’s what she did.”
El-Amin says she’ll never understand how someone could take a child’s life.

Kossow is being held in the Winnebago County Jail. It’s not clear if she was under the influence of anything, leading up to the murder. We spoke with Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro who wouldn’t comment if detectives gave her a drug test.

We spoke with the principal of McIntosh Elementary who didn’t wish to comment. District 205 did release a short statement saying grief counselors and a crisis team are providing support to students and staff.
