More Security at Rockford Marathon

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Rockford’s marathon is just days away and area police say they aren’t taking any chances.

So they’re adding a few officers and a K-9 unit to guard the finish line at this year’s race in downtown Rockford. The race route has changed so more police officers are also needed for street patrols and traffic control, which includes officers from Rockford, Loves Park, and Metro Enforcement. Bags will be checked for participants, but organizers say there are other security changes that may go unnoticed.

“Some of the best security we have is the general public. The public has more eyes than we could ever have in any entity of just law enforcement officials. So as much as we take extra steps, its also important for the general public to be diligent,” said Hank Zemola, Rockford Marathon organizer.

Local officers will have help. More than 200 volunteers are trained to be their extra eyes and ears. More than 2,000 runners are expected to participate.
