Meridian School District Puts Tax Referendum on April Ballot

STILLMAN VALLEY (WIFR) -- The Meridian School District in Stillman Valley is nearly $2 million in the red and school leaders say a property tax hike could help get the 2014 budget close to balanced.

Tuesday night the school board voted to put a referendum on the April ballot that would ask taxpayers to approve a property tax hike. The rate would go up to 3.85%, right now the current tax rate is at 2.7%. Board members say the tax hike is expected to bring in $1.25 million.

The money would help the district pay for education, transportation and other costs.

The board will hold its first public information meeting on the tax referendum next Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. inside Highland Elementary School, 410 S. Hickory St. in Stillman Valley.
