MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- The Machesney Park Village Hall had been a drop-off point for toys, since September, to be distributed to needy families at North Park Church of Christ’s annual “God’s Hand Gift Shop”. This distribution event was held the morning of Saturday, December 14th. In the span of 3 ½ hours, 140 families came through and choose from among the assortment of donated gifts for their children. The families were primarily among clientele for the Church’s Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Thanks to the generosity of those who donated toys, a total of 330 children will be recipients of these gifts on Christmas morning, with each child receiving two gifts, a stocking stuffer, and a bag of candy. Mayor Bolin stated “We are extremely happy that no families were turned away. The community was very charitable and did a fantastic job, to help these kids have a nice Christmas.” He added that Harlem Township Supervisor, Teri Knight, donated a large number of toys to the effort, as well. There was even a surplus of toys still available, to be distributed to families seeking assistance, after the Saturday event.
Dozens of volunteers were on hand, to assist with the distribution operations on Saturday, December 14th, including Mayor Jerry Bolin and his wife Linda, as well as Trustee Erick Beck, and several Village employees.
The Village is very grateful to all of the generous citizens who donated toys, as well as those that helped spread the word about the toy drive. On the morning of December 9th, Channel 13 WREX’s Hannah Welker, did a live remote broadcast from Village Hall. Mayor Bolin stated “Hannah did an excellent job, to promote the toy drive. We were very appreciative of the coverage our efforts received.”
