ROCKFORD – Community Foundation of Northern Illinois has granted LYDIA Urban Academy $1,740 for their implementation of the WorkKeys™ Assessment for their Career Readiness course offered at the school. Career Readiness is part of the academy’s Work Study program that prepares students to be the kind of employees that businesses want to hire and keep.
“The Community Foundation believes it’s essential to fund projects that get to the root causes of the issues that face our community,” says James Patterson, Director of Grants and Scholarships at the Community Foundation. “Clearly, developing a skilled workforce fits that mold. The great thing about the WorkKeys™ system is that it provides a method of demonstrating to employers the marketable skills that the academy students have acquired.”
Cira Guevara, Director of Fund and Community Development at LYDIA, believes that the WorkKeys™ Assessment is another example of how their school gives disadvantaged students more opportunities to be successful after high school. Says Guevara, “When a student can go into a job interview with a certificate that says I have skills to offer, they have opened more doors for their future.” Guevara is also the academy’s Job Coach for the Work Study program.
WorkKeys™ is a job skills assessment measuring skills that employers believe are critical to job success. The assessment specifically measures the ability to learn, listen, communicate, work in teams, and solve problems. Individuals who are tested and pass fall into one of three levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Upon completion and passing of the test, a certificate is given representing the level in which the person ranks.
LYDIA Urban Academy is a NCA accredited, non-traditional, Christian high school whose purpose is to serve students who are not succeeding in a traditional school system. LYDIA is a high school diploma program with a unique focus on character education, work readiness, life skills training, and mentoring.
