Local 9/11 Memorial Still Several Hundred-Thousand Dollars Away from Completion

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Local residents had a chance to see and few pieces of the World Trade Center.

Two steel beams were on display at the Beef-A-Roo on South Alpine Road. The items will soon be highlighted in Winnebago County's future 9/11 Memorial, which recently broke ground near the Justice Center. Organizers say they need around $700,000 to complete the project.

Lt. Brian Carlson, Rockford Fire Department, says, "This is an expensive project with what we are trying to do here. But we want the quality of the memorial. So, we don't want to lessen the cost, we would rather raise the money we needed and have a very nice memorial to represent our responders."

The project should be finished by September 11, 2016.
