Literacy Council Seeking Volunteer Tutors

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Literacy Council is looking for more volunteer tutors to be matched with adults who need to improve their reading skills. According to Stephanie Larson, Literacy Coordinator, “Adult students come to the Literacy Council every week with goals of improving their ability to get a job by improving their reading skills.” Our tutors help students meet goals on the way to getting a job—or furthering their education. The Literacy Council has a waiting list of adults who want to work with tutors on reading skills. Tutors instruct them in phonics, reading comprehension, and writing. To become a tutor, you must be over the age of 18, have a high school diploma, possess good communication skills, flexibility, patience, and have the willingness to meet with a student for two hours a week for a minimum of one year.

Anyone who wants to become a volunteer tutor is invited to sign up for The Literacy Council’s free New Tutor Workshop series. The Council will be offering this training in Rockford starting January 8th. It will be held at the Literacy Council during the evening. Additional trainings are scheduled throughout the year at various times and locations. A schedule can be viewed at www.theliteracycouncil.org. At each workshop, volunteers learn techniques for teaching reading and English as a Second Language to adults. After attendance at the workshop, tutors will be matched with a learner for one-on-one instruction for two hours each week for a minimum of one year. Tutors can work with a learner anywhere in Rockford, Belvidere, or Loves Park.

Individuals interested in volunteering their time to share the joy of reading with an adult may visit www.theliteracycouncil.org to choose a workshop and download a registration form. Or, they may call The Literacy Council today at 815-963-READ.
