Kishwaukee College Offers Humanities Courses for Spring 2013

DEKALB COUNTY (WIFR) -- Kishwaukee College registration for Spring 2013 is currently in progress, offering a wide range of classes for every interest. Among electives, the humanities offerings for Spring 2013 include some courses that explore the breadth of the human experience.

English 286 Literature and Film with instructor Nate Gordon will examine short stories, play, and novels/novellas that have made the transition from the printed page to the big screen, some more than once. Gordon will also look at a variety of adaptations of single works, for example, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as a cartoon and as a live-action feature. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00a.m. - 12:15p.m.

Another class offering a look at film is Humanities 215 Black Cinema with instructor Nadine Franklin. The class focuses on black cinema and filmmakers of the 20th century and will cover not only depictions of black culture, but how films have both mirrored and affected society’s views of race at various points in history. The class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 – 10:45a.m.

Exploring the role of mythology across cultures is the topic of Humanities 217 World Mythology with instructor Tina Hultgren. In addition to covering the more well-known Greek mythology, the class will also explore Egyptian, Indian, Norse, and African mythology.

The realities of genocide are the subject of Humanities 297 Holocaust Literature with instructor Krista McAuliffe. Students will read a variety of memoirs from the concentration camps, including works by Elie Wiesel, Primo Levi, and Charlotte Delbo, as well as historical texts and a memoir of a Polish civilian who hid and protected Jews in Poland.
