Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Recycling Center Hours Expanding

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The organization Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful (KNIB) is giving us more options if we want to recycle in the Stateline.

KNIB has two area recycling centers, one in Roscoe and another on Hydraulic Road in Rockford. The Rockford center has been open on Saturdays for about 6-7 months, but starting today, people can now bring their recyclables to the Hydraulic Road location on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful has been in the area for 25 years working to keep the Stateline clean and teaching others how to keep garbage out of landfills. They hold metal drives where the group collects metals and then scraps it, medication drives taking in anyone’s unused medicine, and also clothing drives where clothes are collected then shipped off to be cleaned and given to the needy in the U.S. and third world countries.

“You can’t help but be optimistic when you see other people s haring your thoughts and ideas and some of your passion. We also operate with nearly 1,500 volunteers. I would say all of those people have some passion, otherwise they wouldn’t be helping us as they do,” said KNIB Board Chairman, Bob McCreath.

Someone who’s been with Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful since the very beginning in executive director Lori Gummow.

Gummow says part of the reason for opening the facility on Tuesday is because the KNIB office gets calls throughout the week and says people want the service. Gummow says this is their opportunity to expand and offer the service to more people. It also lets them reach out to the people who want to recycle but say their landlords don’t have a contract to do so, so instead of people throwing out recyclable goods, they can bring it to the recycling center.

“The more convenient and easy you make it for people, the more likely they are to participate. This is one of 11 programs that we offer the community,” Gummow said.

The Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Rockford Recycle Center (4665 Hydraulic Road, Rockford) is now open 3-6 p.m. Tuesday afternoons (summer hours) starting today, August 5 and 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday mornings. The Roscoe Recycle Center at 13125 N. 2nd Street in Roscoe is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to Noon.
The centers take the following recyclable items:

Corrugated cardboard
Paper
Plastic or glass bottles
Aluminum or metal cans
Bagged clothing and textiles
Electronics (NO TVs or CRTs)
Metals - NO propane tanks or appliances containing FREON (refrigerators, etc.).
