ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The football season is over for the varsity team at Jefferson High School after dozens of players stop showing up to practice.
The school announced Tuesday that it will forfeit its Friday’s varsity game against Harlem, as well at the match up against Belvidere North. Jefferson’s athletic director cancelled last week's game against Boylan. He says for the last 3 weeks, fewer than 10 players have shown up to practice; 33 started the year. When members of the freshman and sophomore teams started missing practice as well, the school made the decision to end the season.
“Obviously we've gotten a large variety of excuses on why kids aren’t coming to practice. That’s fine but like we said, they were given the choice to either start showing on a daily basis or this is the direction were going to go,” say Athletic Director Todd Zimmerman.
Zimmerman says Coach Mike Babcock will remain the head coach at Jefferson.
The freshman and sophomore teams will still play their final two games of the season and Senior Night festivities will still take place on Oct. 18.
