ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford is in town today to help reunite residents with long lost cash.

Rutherford says the treasury department has over a billion dollars in cash and contents from safety deposit boxes that have been abandoned for at least five years.

It's common for people to lose track of their assets when they move or when loved ones pass away. He says there's more to it than just reuniting residents with their money.

The cash dash program returns about 80 million dollars to owners every year.
