Illinois Testing Soil Near Site of 2009 Train Derailment

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- What looks like barrels of toxic waste on the side of Mulford Road is actually just a reminder of the deadly train derailment four years ago.

They're actually filled with soil -- nothing hazardous or harmful to us. The state hired a company called ARCADIS to test the soil and groundwater to make sure it wasn't contaminated by any of the ethanol that leaked out of the tankers during the derailment. ARCADIS says the samples in the barrels have already been tested. The levels of contaminants in the soil were well below state and federal standards.

ARCADIS says it plans on doing more sampling before the end of the year. After that the barrels will be removed.
