CHICAGO (AP) -- Hull House, the Chicago social services organization founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams to help immigrants adjust to life in America, will close its doors this week.
Hull House Association Board chairman Stephen Saunders said Wednesday the organization will shut down Friday and file for bankruptcy because it can no longer afford to stay open. Last week, Saunders said the organization would close in March.
The 122-year-old organization has provided child care, domestic violence counseling, job and literacy training, services for senior citizens and housing assistance for 60,000 people annually in the Chicago area.
Chicago Department of Family and Support Services spokesman Anne Sheahan says her organization has funded Hull House Head Start programs. She says her organization is working to find providers to take over those services.
