Haunted House Regulations

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- New state fire regulations have forced several local haunted houses to shut-down.

Haunted houses are meant to scare us, however, the state Fire Marshall’s office wanted to make sure there wasn't chaos and panic during a real emergency. That's why the new guidelines were put in place and not with much notice.

An email dated October 21 of 2011, is the basis for why inspectors with the Boone County Fire Department say that just wasn't enough time to make these changes so they worked with the Fire Marshall’s office for another year.

Just to give you an idea, "Karnival of Karnage" spent $20,000 on the safety requirements.

The new regulations come in response to a 1984 fire in New Jersey where eight people died. Several preventable factors contributed to the fire. Karnival of Karnage opens tomorrow night from seven to midnight. It costs $12 to get in.
