ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- A published report says half of the families led by single moms in Rockford lived in poverty in 2012.

The Rockford Register Star reports the rate was even higher for moms with children younger than five years, about 62 percent. The newspaper cites U.S. Census information for the story published Sunday. It's part of a series the newspaper does on poverty in the struggling manufacturing region that still has among the highest unemployment rates in the country.

Jordan Carpenter is a single mother of a three-year-old daughter. They live with friends in a mobile home.

Carpenter left a subsidized apartment earlier in the year but when the salon where she worked didn't have hours she lost her job. She says it's a struggle to pay for groceries.
