Grassroots Group Hopes to Tackle Crime in Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Neighborhood groups are getting even more active this summer especially with the recent rash of violent crime.

We stopped by the Concerned Citizens of Rockford meeting Thursday night. Members say their goal is to prevent more people from falling victim to crime. They plan to do that by hosting monthly meetings where neighbors can share information and tips. Only about a dozen people attended, however, organizers say they aren't discouraged and have bigger plans then sitting in a room to discuss the city's crime problems.

"We're there to help the police. They can't be everywhere, we can, and when we see things and we report it to the police, I think they've done a good job of handling it but I think they cant be everywhere and I think this is our job as citizens and were not doing it.

The group holds meetings every third Thursday at spots around town.
