Freeport Mayoral Candidate Under Attack

FREEPORT (WIFR) – It’s been a clean race for Freeport mayoral candidates so far, but now, less than a week away from election day, Jim Gitz is under attack.

A card was mailed to Freeport residents a few days ago from a group called concerned citizens of Freeport. It accuses candidate Jim Gitz of driving without proper car insurance and calls him a deadbeat dad, due to a paternity suit in 2011. His opponent Jon Staben says his campaign team was not involved with the making of these cards.

Gitz says Freeport doesn’t need this kind of messy politics.
“The accusations in the card are untrue, I’ve always supported my children, the courts has always agreed I’ve supported my children I don't think these accusations have any place in a political campaign,” said Gitz.

Gitz didn’t want to comment on who may have sent the cards, although he says he does have an idea.
