Former Rockford Teacher Files Lawsuit Against District 205

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- "I was not hired back because of the assault."

Shannon Symonds' suit was filed in federal court today. It states Dr. Sheffield and the district violated Shannon's first amendment rights and retaliated against her.

Last March, Shannon reported being punched by a student and needed to see a doctor. She says per Dr. Sheffield's discipline policy, no one reported it to the police.

Within about a week, Shannon received a letter from the district stating she was being let go due to budget cuts. She reapplied for several positions in the district and was told by at least two administrators they'd like to hire her. But she claims she was blacklisted and never hired back.

She is now an elementary school teacher in Freeport.

Ms. Symonds has every right to sue the district. All she wanted was her job back. I am glad she stuck up to the bullies and defended herself. It is Rockford's problem for not dealing with issues and I hope she bankrupt's them. There is a reason that a majority of the schools are Title I, becasue most parents that can afford to have moved out or placed their kids into private schools.

Hey Disgusted? Did you not READ the story??? Symonds isn't suing because she got laid-off. She is suing because she was promised another job, and because she had a voice, she was blacklisted by LaVonne Sheffield. Believe me, Shannon was not the only one this has happened to. She is the just the only one who has stood up to the tyranny. You people need to do your homework. And to say a woman scorned??? Hey Wake, if you are going to quote literary cliches make sure you know how to put them into proper contex. A woman scorned? Really? The problem with today's society, not enough people stand up for what is right. People need to be aware that this kind of conduct must be stopped. I could tell you things that have gone on in Sheffield's office that would make your hair stand on end. But, if you want our children and our tax dollars flushed down the toilet, then just sit back and say foolish things like, "the district has no money," "get on with your life," "I'm sick of people blaming Sheffield," etc... Wake up Rockford and get your heads in the game.

To Disgusted the article states she is employed in the Freeport district, she is not unemploted. And yes this district has been terrible for years. And "DR" Sheffield added to the already out of control situation. Did any of you not read the letters between her and the former Auburn principal? How well did they look into her background, I do not think they did. They just wanted to fill the position. I am sure this teacher has a real claim. Umfortunetaly it is the kids that suffer also. I am sure there are many more teachers and staff that have simular complaints. If I could have afforded it I would have moved my children a long time ago.

So lets see, Your laid off so your going to sue your employer? What if EVERY unemployed citizen sued their former place of work? Sounds like this chick just wants someone to pay her way so she doesn't have to find a new job... Besides, Does she not know that this school district HAS NO MONEY!! So lets make the district waste money on litigation so she can collect. Maybe she was a poor excuse for a teacher? Did that ever cross her mind?

With all the coverups, as in "don't report" all the lying, criminal, on and on, and now filing a lawsuit cause she got let go, should be lawsuit for the coverup of the whole system. I never saw the teachers strike for fairness or for upholding laws and safety, just for more money and benefits, and now she is a teacher in another area, who would want to work in that kind of environment, she sees what goes on and yet still pursues that job.

Another lawsuit. Is that all people have to do these days? It's ridiculous. Get over it and move on with your life.

Theres nothing like a woman scorned! If everyone filled law suits every time they feel they was wronged, nothing would ever get fixed. I'm sick of people blaming Dr. Sheffield for everything wrong with our schools. We must remember she inherited the mess. Stop coming up with more problems, its time to hear solutions! Geesh people are we really gonna keep trying to make it seem like she was our biggest problem, when the school systems been a joke for over two decades, just like our focus on keeping rockford growing in the right direction!
