OREGON, Ill. (AP) -- Repairs on the historic Black Hawk Statue in northern Illinois are pending approval from two state agencies.

In details 23 News reported two weeks ago, organizers need approval from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Frank Rausa of Sterling is leading efforts to fix the 103-year-old concrete statue along with Friends of the Black Hawk Statue.

The 50-foot-tall Ogle County statue stands on a 125-foot bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park. It pays tribute to Native Americans and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Meanwhile fundraising continues to pay for the repairs. So far nearly $725,000 has been raised, or enough to pay for about 80 percent of the work.

Organizers have said they hope to begin work next month.
