Fire Prevention Week Kicks Off

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Smokey the Bear may be out of work for the foreseeable future, but the Rockford Fire Department is still out in full force to inform kids about fire safety.

Fire prevention week kicked off at Home Depot today with activities for the whole family.

Kids were able to spray a fire hose, slide down a fire pole and even make a fire plane.

This year, the fire department is encouraging the public to prevent kitchen fires.

"We just like to teach them some of the common sense things about being safe around the stove and in the kitchen, let the parents do the cooking, and if they see someone else playing with fire, make sure they report it to a parent," said Fire Prevention Coordinator Mark Marinaro. "Never play with matches or lighters and just keep driving that message home."

Kitchen fires are the leading area of origin of home fires with nearly 3,000 reported daily in the United States.
