ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Last night's intense winds turned a small fire at a Cherry Valley building, into a total loss.
Multiple emergency crews worked into the night, trying to extinguish high flames coming through the roof. The building is right across the street from Cherryvale Mall and used to be home to the former Ski-Rack shop. The facility's owner says four businesses worked out of the property, including a wedding shop, spa, vitamins store, and dance studio. Firefighters says the building did not have any sprinklers or an alarm system, causing the flames to spread more quickly.
"The response went quite well, we recovered assistance from several departments we have plenty of help here just took a little bit longer to get the job done based on the weather conditions we had,” said Cherry Valley Fire Chief Allen Geeser.
The building's owner tells us he did have insurance.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Strong snow storm winds made for a difficult battle as flames broke out in the old Ski Rack shop on Pawlisch Drive around 7 p.m. Thursday night. When firefighters arrived they could see flames shooting through the roof.
The fire was specific to the old Ski Rack building. Firefighters were still on the scene as of 11:30 p.m. and they estimate the building to be a total loss.
No injuries have been reported. The building did not have any sprinklers or an alarm system, the Fire Department believes that was another cause of the fire spreading so quickly.
