FREEPORT (WIFR) -- ’Tis the season again for holiday cheer! FHN is proud to offer a full slate of fun activities for the whole family this holiday season. Welcome to the FHN Festival of Trees 2012!
This year’s festivities begin Saturday, Nov. 17 with the kick-off of our popular Holiday Movie Series hosted by FHN and Classic Cinemas Lindo Theatre. Movies begin at 10 a.m. each Saturday through Dec. 15. Admission is just $3.50 and all children attending will receive a holiday gift. Seating is limited, and there are no advance ticket sales, so plan to get there early! This year’s movies are:
Nov. 17 – Wreck-It Ralph
Nov. 24 – The Grinch (free)
Dec. 1 – Rise of the Guardians
Dec. 8 – Dino Time
Dec. 15 – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
There will also be a special showing of the original 1947 Miracle on 34th Street, starring Edmund Gwen, Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, and Natalie Wood, at 1 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Admission is a free-will offering and/or a food drive contribution.
Alan Wenzel and Ed Finch, hosts of the popular Classic Movie Series at the Lindo Theatre, will greet movie-goers at both shows with historical tidbits and movie trivia about the film, and will lead a brief discussion about this holiday classic following each showing.
The public is invited to gather in front of FHN Memorial Hospital for the Community Holiday Tree Lighting after the Downtown Freeport.
Mistletoe Walk on Sunday, Nov. 18. Starting around 5 p.m., cookies and cocoa and some special visitors – including Santa – will be served to help start the season. This year’s gala event will be held Friday, Nov. 30. The FHN CasiNO TO CANCER Holiday Gala will feature casino-style games, food, music, entertainment, dancing and silent auction shopping at the Freeport Masonic Temple. Proceeds benefit the FHN Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased online at www.fhn.org or by calling toll-free 1-877-6000-FHN (1-877-600-0346) ext. 901.
The Community Festival of Trees begins Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Freeport Public Library. This popular event features trees decorated by local non-profits and groups competing for cash prizes. People’s Choice voting will be open through Sunday, Dec. 16, and the trees will be on display through Friday, Dec. 28. A special free performance by the HCC Children’s Choir will celebrate the opening of the Community Festival of Trees at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at the library.
School choirs from across northwest Illinois will perform at Singin’ at the King starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at the King Community Campus in Freeport. Suggested admission price is one canned good or other food item for the FACC food pantry.
Finally, take a walk with your family and enjoy the beauty of Freeport’s Stephenson Street and Lincoln Boulevard on Luminary Night Sunday, Dec. 23. The neighborhood’s residents (including FHN Memorial Hospital) decorate their sidewalks with luminaria to celebrate the season.
