UPDATE: WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Investigators tell us the three suspects in custody are charged with the two most recent home invasions in the area involving violence to two separate elderly couples.

ROCKTON (WIFR) – Investigators say an elderly couple attacked by two men walked in on the suspects burglarizing their home before their two dogs were shot and killed.

Police say this was a very violent attack and say the men used their weapons to beat the man and woman who are believed to be in their 70’s. Both are expected to survive, however, as you can imagine it was a very traumatizing experience.

Investigators tell us it all went down around 6:00 last night in the 4800 block of Favor Road in rural Rockton. This is the second home invasion in less than a month. Another elderly couple was badly injured in a similar attack in Rockford’s Imperial Oaks neighborhood. Police are now trying to determine if the two are linked.

"Normally burglaries are committed quickly where the suspects go in and take what they are going to take before they flee but these guys were prepared to do something else,” said Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.

It’s still not clear if the suspects actually took anything from the home, although we are told they had piles of things ready to go out the door. Police say if we are ever in a similar situation, there isn’t a hard and fast rule, we’re told to use our best judgment.

Deputies are looking for two black men in their 20’s. They may have been driving a mid-sized dark colored car, something similar to a Grand Prix or Grand-Am. This has been a rough few weeks for the family. We’re told the victims’ daughter, Tara Sheetz was running in the Boston Marathon during the bombing.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- For the second time in a week another couple is in the hospital after trying to stop someone from breaking into their home.

The elderly couple is expected to be okay, but they are in the hospital. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department says both were beaten -- the husband with the butt of a rifle, and their dog was shot.

It happened around 6p.m. Thursday evening at 4826 Favor Road in southwestern Rockton. The sheriff's department says the two burglars shot the dog when they were inside, then when they were leaving the couple came home. There aren't many homes in this area which makes solving the case even harder.

"There's not much traffic and the closest homes are quite a distance away so we are making contact with the closest residences to see if anyone observed anything," Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro, said.
Deputies are looking for two black men in their 20's. They may have been driving a mid-sized brown vehicle, something similar to a Grand Prix or Grand Am.

Last Thursday a husband was shot and his wife hurt when two men tried breaking into their Rockford home. No word if the two incidents are connected.
