SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos met with federal officials about Thomson Correctional Center in northwestern Illinois.
Durbin and Bustos say they met Thursday with Charles Samuels, who is director of the Department of Justice's Bureau of Prisons. The U.S. Senate's Appropriations Committee approved funding in July to reactivate Thomson. The state opened the prison in 2001 but never fully opened it because of budget problems. The federal government bought it for $165 million last fall.
Durbin and Bustos say Samuels told them progress is being made toward opening the facility.
