BELOIT (WIFR) -- After a successful year of Dual Language Immersion (DLI) classes at Hackett and Robinson, the district is responding to parents’ demand for the classes by expanding the program to more schools.
Starting this Fall, Converse and Todd Elementary Schools will have DLI classes, in addition to Hackett and Robinson. The latter three will have both kindergarten and first grade DLI sections available, while Converse will begin with a Kindergarten section.
After reviewing current enrollment numbers and seeing a growing waiting list for DLI, the district immediately began investigating space and staffing and discovered expansion was possible.
Students new to the program can begin at kindergarten or first grade. First grade is the latest recommended time for entry into the DLI program, especially for students learning Spanish as a second language, according to the program’s coordinator, Rosamaria Laursen. Next year, second grade will be added at the schools and so on, as the program progresses along with the student cohorts.
To submit a request to enter the program, parents can stop by the Central Enrollment Office (1633 Keeler Avenue), to fill out the application form. Parents will receive confirmation within two weeks whether their child was accepted into the program. Todd and Converse parents who have submitted requests to attend DLI at Hackett or Robinson can change their requests by stopping by Central Enrollment or by calling 361-4170.
