Downtown Rockford Parking Problems

DOWNTOWN ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Trying to find a parking spot in Downtown Rockford can be a pain, especially when there's an IceHogs game or special event. That's why the City of Rockford and the Rockford Area Venues and Entertainment Board are working together to make it easier for you during your night out.

Members with the RAVE are weighing different parking options. Especially during events at downtown venues like the BMO Harris Bank Center. Some say it's been difficult to find a spot since the city closed two levels of the Chestnut Street parking garage last year due to structural issues. Now they're considering building a new garage, but RAVE Chairman Mike Dunn wants a more immediate solution which could include free parking.

"What we're trying to find is the balance between ticket prices and parking prices and how best to address that situation in determining how best to attract people to the events and keep it affordable," Dunn said.

Dunn says they don't have a deadline to figure out the parking situation. In the meantime, residents are allowed to park in the county parking lot on Church Street north of the BMO Center during special events.
