ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Some District 205 students are having a tough time getting to school due to a lack of sidewalks and crumbling concrete, that's why school leaders are taking action.
Tonight the Operations Committee approved a resolution to prepare a list of the most critical areas that need repair. If the the full school board approves the measure, the district will then submit that list to the city and county to work together to fix and create sidewalks.
Recent surveys done as part of the district's 10-Year Facility Master Plan estimates it will cost $2 million just to fix some of the worst areas at 34 different sites.

IF the city & county agree to fix crumbling sidewalks, then I also want them to make sure that sidewalks are installed in the ne areas where the city & county were EXTREMELY lax in making sure that when the houses were built, the builders also installed sidewalks following city ordinance. The ne children walking to bus stops AND school do NOT have ANY sidewalks to walk on. They MUST walk in the street whether there is snow or not!! I want to make sure the ne quadrant school children get the same consideration for safety!!!
I was downtown last week and has to step over broken bricks around the light poles in the 200 block of W. State. They want people to come downtown, then make it safe to walk. At least it in the daytime so I could see the broken bricks on the sidewalk. The sidewalks to school should be smooth and safe.
