The Sandy Hook shooting has brought the gun violence debate to the fore-front, and here at home, a Dekalb teacher is pushing for a solution. Nearly five years after the NIU campus shooting that killed five people and injured dozens.
Fourth grade teacher Dan Kenney is organizing a community forum expected to take place this Friday.
Kenney says he wants parents and other residents to have a chance to weigh in on the issue. The city's police chief and the county's state's attorney will also join the conversation.
Dekalb's mayor is apart of a national organization called "Mayors Against Illegal Guns".
"All these different types of initiatives raise the awareness and makes it clear to those individuals in our community who use guns for not good purposes, makes them aware that we're on the watch-out for this, and we're going to be doing something about it."
The public forum takes place Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Dekalb beginning at 7 p.m.
