MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- A scary situation for a Machesney Park man serves as a reminder for the rest of us: the dangers of Craigslist. This is a story you told us about on our Facebook page.
Craigslist can be a good way to buy and sell things or to find places to live, but we have to remember it's also an easy way for criminals to find victims. It's a lesson one Machesney Park man learned the hard way.
Monday afternoon two men came to his house on Liberty Boulevard to buy a laptop he was selling on Craigslist. He says everything seemed fine until he asked the men to pay up, that's when they pulled a gun. The men stole the laptop and a few other things from the home, but luckily the seller wasn't hurt. Police say this serves as a warning to all of us to not let strangers in our homes and that craigslist is convenient, but not always safe.
"If your heart tells you that something's wrong, or something doesn't feel right, or you're suspicious of a person you have to go with that and not allow a person in your home that you don't know, and if you do, certainly have other people present with you," Winnebago County Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro, said.
Unfortunately there's not a lot we can do to check if a Craigslist buyer is safe, but another suggestion is to meet that person in a public place that way they're less likely to victimize you.
