Community Celebrating Life of Martin Luther King Jr.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Members of the community gathered at the Saint Paul Church of God in Christ in Rockford to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through song and discussion.

One faith leader says this is a time to reflect on how far this country has come since Dr. King first advocated for the rights of African American people.

"They say you don't remember your past, you repeat it. Remembering of how we got here, what has transpired to get where we are. And then, it helps motivate you for the future. We see the progress now. Look now, we have the first African American president,” said Choir Leader Elton Allen.

The Washington Park Community Center in Rockford will host a citywide youth and young adult extravaganza. All kids are invited to come out to sing, dance and play from 11 a-m until 2 p-m..
