STEPHENSON COUNTY (WIFR) – An ordinance recently shot down would have banned video gambling systems in parts of Stephenson County.

It was voted down by a 5-2 vote in committee. The ordinance would have affected bars and restaurants in unincorporated parts of the county. Some bar owners say the board members who voted in favor of the law have the wrong idea about people who use the video gambling systems.
“We look at it as they’re discriminating,” said Kim Rogers, manager at Route 20 Bar and Grill. “How are we any different than anyone else?”
“We have a revenue problem in the county and this is a way of generating revenue,” said county board chairman Bill Hadley.
Those who supported the ban say video gambling is a negative vice that contributes to poverty and child abuse.
It’s not certain if the ordinance will come up for a vote again.
